How Hospice Makes the Difference: Comfort, Choice, Dignity and Support at Life's End

Facing a life-limiting (terminal) illness can be overwhelming, both for the patient and their loved ones. Hospice care steps in during this critical time, offering a unique approach that prioritises comfort, dignity, and patient control. It is a holistic philosophy of care that goes far beyond simply treating the physical symptoms of illness.

The care provided by Hospice Isle of Man can benefit any patient facing a palliative diagnosis where no curative treatment is being sought and where they require specialist palliative care. Not all patients are in their final days or weeks of life; care can be offered at any point after diagnosis is made and our goal is to improve a patient’s quality of life throughout their illness.

In 2023, 49.3% of deaths on the Isle of Man involved patients under Hospice Isle of Man's care. It is projected that the need for palliative care will increase by 25% by 2048 across the UK. This shows how crucial the care provided by Hospice is for our community both now and into the future.

Hospice Isle of Man is a charity and the only dedicated resource for end of life care on this island. We have been making the difference to the lives of patients and their loved ones for over 40 years.

1. Expert Symptom Management:

Hospice care prioritises managing pain and other symptoms that can significantly impact a patient's quality of life. With decades of experience, our skilled team of professionals and volunteers work around the clock to meet each patient's needs. This includes providing pain medication, physiotherapy, and other treatments to ensure comfort.

Our modern purpose-built facility, serving both children and adults, has been designed to support independence and handle complex needs. Patients have free access to specialised knowledge, equipment and facilities to improve their quality of life.

2. Patient Control and Choice:

Hospice care empowers patients to make decisions about their care, focusing on maximising comfort and ensuring that life remains meaningful and fulfilling. Patients are directly involved in their care plan, treatment options, and daily routines. This sense of control fosters dignity and a sense of peace.

We bring care directly to you, whether at home, in care homes and hospitals. Our "Hospice at Home" on call service is available 24/7, supporting patients and carers and allowing those who wish to stay at home in their last one or two weeks of life. Our "Your Hospice, Your Way" sessions offer a flexible, welcoming space for anyone with a life-limiting condition, their friends, and carers.

3. Holistic Support for Body, Mind, and Spirit:

Hospice care addresses the whole person – physically, emotionally, and spiritually.  Beyond our In-Patient Unit and Community service, we offer various support services for the entire family, including:

4. Family Respite and Education:

Caring for a loved one with a terminal illness can be exhausting. We offer respite care to carers of patients on the Hospice Caseload, allowing them to rest and focus on their own wellbeing, knowing their loved ones are in safe hands. Family members also have access to our support services.

We educate families about the dying process, offering emotional support and guidance as they navigate this difficult time. Caregivers can learn how to best support their loved ones and receive help with their caregiving tasks.

5. Rebecca House, Children’s Hospice

Our combined children's and adult hospice is a unique and comforting resource. Rebecca House offers respite, palliative, and end-of-life care for children with life-limiting conditions from birth to 18 years. This facility supports families with physical, emotional, recreational, and spiritual care under one roof, easing transitions from paediatric to adult care and fostering a strong sense of community.

Hospice care is about making the most of the time that remains, allowing patients and their loved ones to face the end of life with dignity and support. For over 40 years Hospice Isle of Man has provided stability and comfort. If you or a loved one is facing a terminal illness, talk to your doctor about how hospice care can help.
