Glenda Darbyshire - Patient Relative

"The care that Dave received from being admitted to Hospice to when he passed away two days later was wonderful, the Doctors and nursing team ensured that Dave was comfortable and well looked after in his final days.

“My husband Dave was first referred to Hospice at the beginning of the year, we had the lovely nurse Gilly keeping in touch by phone or visit us every month to make sure that we were both ok.

In May 2024, the Hospice Community Team had to come to our home to look after Dave and make him comfortable, it was not only Dave they looked after, they supported Daves Daughter and myself as well, explaining what drugs he was having, and what was happening.

Nothing was too much trouble, we could call them anytime day or night as they were available 24 hours, we got to know them quite well! They were lovely with Dave, and had him laughing, he loved a bit of banter! But as well as being professional, they were so thoughtful and kind to us all (even the barking dog, who wanted a bit of a fuss as well).

When it came time for Dave to be transferred to Hospice in TT Practice week, Cheryl the Hospice nurse went with Dave in the ambulance to make sure everything was ok for him, and Gemma very kindly was my chauffeur to Hospice, she was lovely and calm which was appreciated at this upsetting time.

In Hospice, Dave had a lovely room, the Hospice team were so friendly and caring, they not only looked after Dave, but they also looked after Dave’s daughter Donna, myself and our dog (well he is part of the family), we were able to stay in the same room with Dave, which was great as we didn’t want to leave him.

We are so lucky on the Island to have our fantastic Hospice and Hospice in the community staff, they really help to make a difficult time a little bit easier, it must be such a hard job to do, but they all love what they do and is obvious as I have seen how they were with Dave. I am so very grateful from the bottom of my heart and will never forget how kind everyone was with us.”
