Each of our teams hold a vital piece of the puzzle in making up Hospice Isle of Man. Our Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) Team are a central part of our healthcare team. They are usually the first people you will come into contact with here at Hospice. They ensure that patients can access care in the place of their choice.
Next, let's get to know Gilly Culshaw.
Gilly is a Clinical Nurse Specialist and is a relatively new member of the team, having been here 2 years.
What does a day look like in your role?
"I work 3 days a week, a typical day usually starts with our community meeting where we discuss specific patients, concerns they are facing, Hospice at Home patients, bed state and admissions required for the in-patient unit. After this I act on the outcomes of this meeting where needed and will then go on to any telephone consultations/home visits I have planned with patients. During these conversations I explore and help manage physical symptoms of disease, as well as providing a level of psychological and social support referring to other internal Hospice services and external services as required. I work closely with other health care services both in the community and within Noble’s trying to optimise patient care. Personally, my whole aim is to provide holistic care to the patients I see and their families with the intention of making a difficult time a little bit easier and support them to live well and better for whatever remaining time they have left."
What’s your favourite thing about working at Hospice?
"I love working at Hospice Isle of Man, there is a great sense of community and every single member of the team here from whatever domain works hard to ensure that the service delivered to patients is the best that it can be. I love working in the community setting as it allows me to get to know patients better and to provide more personalised care, specific to their needs."
Share a highlight story or a favourite memory from your time at Hospice.
"There have been so may highlights and it is hard to think of one! A special part of my job is being able to spend time with patients and their families, I meet so many wonderful people who amaze me every day with the strength, dignity and often humour they have whilst going through one of the most difficult part of their lives- I truly feel privileged to provide care and be a part of their journey."
