Heading towards the end of the year, we have recently said goodbye to our student nurses who undertook recent placements with us. They always do such a fantastic job, that we wanted to introduce them and get to know them a little bit more.
This is Charlotte Clancey, Charlotte was with us for 8 weeks, after being one of our HCA's as well!
1. What made you first want to embark on a career in nursing?
I have always had an interest in the nursing/care industry. I returned to the island from travelling (cut short due to covid) and started to work in a nursing home. I recognised that I had found my passion and wished to increase my experience, which led me to become a HCA at hospice. After being a HCA at hospice, I soon recognised and appreciated the true privilege it is to care for patients and their families both in the community and on the inpatient unit. I believe the true holistic approach to care at hospice is what cemented my desire to start my training to become a Registered Nurse.
2. How long was your placement at Hospice and what learning opportunities were made available to you?
I was at hospice for 8 weeks, which flew by so fast! I was provided with lots of learning opportunities, some of which included; medicines management, direct patient care, learning from different members of the multidisciplinary team, inpatient care, community care, as well as being able to participate in education sessions too.
3. What have you enjoyed most about your placement?
It's hard to summarise one thing that I have enjoyed most at hospice. I have thoroughly enjoyed my placement and have been supported by such an amazing team. My whole experience has really added great value to my practice as a student nurse and future Registered Nurse. I have learnt and been able to practice invaluable skills from many different professionals.
4. What have you learnt on your placement that you will take away with you?
I have been able to learn lots of new skills and gain a wealth of knowledge from members of the clinical team which will undoubtedly benefit my future practice, in my next placement and also when I qualify. The importance of holistic person-centred care fundamentally underpins nursing care at hospice, which I am very proud to have been a part of throughout my placement.
Thank you so much to Charlotte for the 8 weeks she was with us and her time as a HCA - it's been an absolute pleasure!
