Each of our teams hold a vital piece of the puzzle in making up Hospice Isle of Man.
Our Volunteer Team look after over 430 incredible, dedicated volunteers who help make Hospice what it is.
We wouldn’t be here without our volunteers, therefore we wouldn't be here without the people that do a fantastic job at looking after them! First up, let’s meet our Volunteer Services Manager, Sarah Falconer, who has been with us since 2023.
What’s your role?
"At the moment I’m wearing 2 hats. I am the Volunteer Services Manager for 1 day a week and also the Commercial Projects Manager for the remaining 4. The Volunteer Services Office supports approximately 430 volunteers all doing a huge variety of roles."
How long have you been at Hospice?
"I started volunteering for Hospice in 2022 mainly on the Reception Desks in IPU and the Day Unit. I then applied for the Volunteer Services Coordinator role in May 23 – which I was very lucky to get. I moved into the Volunteer Manager role in Dec 23 when the lovely Dee Copley left and working on the Commercial Projects is a 1-year secondment role – which I’m very excited to be doing."
What does a day look like in your role?
"There is no such thing as a typical day in the Volunteer Office. You may start off the day with good intentions to process Volunteer Applications, organise volunteer drivers for Hospice patients and prepare next months’ rota’s but the day never works out the way you want it to. You just never know what you’re going to get involved in, who will come through the door, what the next phone call will be. You really have to be a juggler of many tasks and think on your feet. Every day is an exciting new challenge!"
What’s your favourite thing about working at Hospice?
"I think for me it’s the people you get to meet when you work here. Whether that be the supporters of Elaine’s Café, the Hospice patients, the volunteers, the families of the patients or the Hospice Staff themselves. Everyone is in and around Hospice for a reason and we are privileged to be here to support them. It makes working for Hospice just such a great thing to do each day."
Share a highlight story or a favourite memory from your time at Hospice.
"My highlight is the Children’s Halloween Party we held in October 2024. The feedback from our IPU nurses we got was really positive. They said all the patients had their French doors and windows open into the garden, to watch and hear the children all having fun."
